Implants
In addition to restorative dentistry, Dr. Bugaj also has expertise in dental surgery. When teeth are missing or lost, and a patient wants a more permanent solution than dentures, dental implants are the course of treatment they select.
There are many benefits to dental implants: they look and feel like natural teeth, they are durable and strong, and they restore your natural chewing ability.
What are dental implants? In simple terms, they are titanium rods or screws that are fixed in the bone. An extension is then attached to the implant and a new crown is placed on the extension to match the color and contours of the existing teeth. Typically, dental implants are done in two stages. Dr. Bugaj has the expertise and equipment to perform the entire procedure in the comfort of his office.
The first stage, placing the implant, is a relatively minor procedure, usually carried out with a local anesthetic. Gum tissue is refracted (peeled back) to ensure proper placement of the implant as well as to make sure sensitive nerves are avoided. When the proper placement is decided, Dr. Bugaj then places the implant into the supporting bone structure.
Once the implant is placed in the bone, it is covered with an antiseptic dressing. This dressing is removed approximately two weeks after the initial implant. Over the course of three to six months, the implant integrates with the bone to become permanently stable. During this time, a removable bridge is used to close your gap for aesthetics and function.
In the second treatment stage, a precision-fitted post is attached into the implant. Dr. Bugaj then sculpts the final new tooth crown out of porcelain. He matches the crown to your natural teeth and adheres it permanently into place. The entire process takes approximately six months to complete.
Just like your natural teeth, once your implant is complete, good oral hygiene habits and regular teeth cleanings are key to maintaining your implant.
